Christ's College Gains Eco-Schools Green Flag Award With Distinction
Christ's College students involved in our Environment Association have been awarded a coveted Eco-Schools Green Flag Award with distinction on the first attempt - a fantastic achievement. The accreditation, recognises their amazing work in making Christ's College more environmentally friendly and raising eco-awareness in fellow students.
Eco-Schools is an international education programme that prompts young people to explore sustainability and climate change and take action.
Students collaborated with Head of Geography, Mrs Hughes to conduct an environmental review, assessing how eco-friendly the college was. They reviewed everything from our recycling practices, to energy usage, to how environmental themes are covered in classrooms. Building on their findings, the Environment Association planned a year of activities that would up their green-credentials.
There are still a few things in the pipeline, including planting a hedgerow along our fence line, and rolling out reusable water bottles for all students across the school in partnership with 'Bottle up!' water. We are also looking into how to usefully recycle in a more efficient and effective way.
This year has seen students attend a climate conference and support the new local 'Zero' climate change organisation, making green hearts for display. We have introduced recycled, forest friendly paper for all our paper supplies and held assemblies and meetings to raise awareness of litter, taking care of the planet and how we could support sustainable practice. These are all issues connected to our school's core values.
Mrs Hughes said; 'It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with such passionate, committed and knowledgeable students who have raised awareness of a wide range of issues across the school, and continue to work towards total sustainable practice here at Christ's College.'
Eco-Schools England Manager, Adam Flint, said: “Earning an Eco-Schools Green Flag Award takes passion, commitment and a desire to make a difference. Pupils should be proud of their great work. They’re an inspiration and it makes us feel heartened and positive about the future of our planet.”
