The Brilliant Club & Scholars Programme

Brilliant Club and Scholars programme

In January 2022 Christ's College will be launching a new Brilliant Club with 12 Year 9 students taking part in The Scholars Programme.   This is an academic programme run by The Brilliant Club, which provides students from non-selective state schools with the opportunity to work with a PhD researcher to experience university-style learning. It helps them to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to secure a place at a highly-selective university.

Students were identified by their teachers as having the potential to make a successful application to one of the UK’s most competitive universities in the future. Although university may not be for everyone, The Scholars Programme aims to give children an experience of university learning to help them make an informed decision.

As part of The Scholars Programme, students will:

  • Study with a PhD researcher, in small groups, to experience university-style learning,  PHD tutors share their subject knowledge and passion for learning with small groups of students, designed to stretch and challenge them beyond the curriculum.
  • Research a topic outside of the usual school curriculum, learning an exciting new topic whilst gaining valuable academic skills.
  • Students will take part in six after-school tutoring periods and take part in two university visits, .  They also need to complete a challenging 2,000 word assignment which will be marked in university-style being with students receiving a 1st, 2.1 or 2.2 etc grade.
  • Learn more about university life by engaging directly with highly-selective universities and visiting two universities followed by a graduation in March 2022
