Oliver Porter Wins Woking Young Sports Personality of the Year
Many congratulations to gymnast, Oliver Porter in Year 8 who has won the Woking Borough Council Young Sports Personality of the Year.
The Sports Woking Awards 2020 celebrate sports people who have continued to excel in the face of adversity and to achieve their personal best.
The judges were impressed with Oliver's work ethic and progress in elite gymnastics. Prior to the pandemic he achieved a place in the Development Squad and also received top scores on the pommel at Elite Level 4 both regionally and nationally.
Although there have been no competitions to aim for in the last year, that hasn't stopped his enthusiasm. Oliver continued to train virtually with Woking Gymnastics Club and British Gymnastics throughout the year. He trained alongside his brothers Josh in Year 11 (part of the England squad) and younger brother Ben in Year 6 (who is also a member of GB's National squad). They have a busy schedule with two Zoom sessions each evening and then additional weekly National squad sessions.
Oliver's mother Chantelle said "We’re extremely proud of Oli. He’s worked so hard and stayed positive which has been recognised. The boys really help to motivate each other. They train in our garage which has been converted into a gym - although, at the moment, it’s so cold they’ve been training in the lounge! "
Well done to all three gymnasts for their achievements and support of each other, and especially to Oliver for this fantastic recognition of all his hard work, talent and enthusiasm.
