Pupil Premium & Catch Up Funding

Pupil Premium Funding

The Pupil Premium grant is additional funding provided to schools in England to help close the attainment gap that exists between disadvantaged students and their peers.

In the 2020-21 financial year, secondary schools will receive £955 for each pupil registered as eligible for free school meals (FSM) in the last 6 years.  There is no expectation that schools should spend the grant only on eligible pupils, or on a per eligible pupil basis.  Some of the most effective spending will be on whole school strategies, including improving the quality of teaching, which have the potential to impact positively on all pupils.

The funding is allocated for schools to

  • Improve academic outcomes of disadvantaged pupils of all abilities and help them to reach their potential.
  • Close the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers.

A student is considered 'disadvantaged' and is entitled to the Pupil Premium if they are;

  • Eligible for Free Schools Meals (FSM) in the last six years; or
  • "Looked after" continuously for 1 day or more.
  • Adopted from care.

Free School Meals - you can find out if you are eligible to apply for Free School Meals here and apply using this Application Form .

At Christ's College we have used the funding to raise attainment through a variety of programmes and activities, We have identified, in the main, the following to be barriers for our disadvantaged students:

  • Attendance
  • Aspiration
  • Some low levels of literacy and numeracy on arrival in Year 7

We aim to secure excellent progress and attainment for those students who are eligible for the Pupil Premium funding.

Our plans for 2019-21 state how we will use the funding to support students. Covid-19 has impacted our disadvantaged students, particularly with the technology gap.

Catch Up Premium Funding   (Update February 2021)

The government announced additional funding to support children and young people to catch up lost time after school closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This is especially important for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged backgrounds. This funding includes an £80.00 payment per pupil for the 2020 to 2021 academic year to ensure that schools have the support they need to help all pupils make up for lost teaching time.

Schools should use this funding for specific activities to support their pupils to catch up for lost teaching over the previous months and in a way that suits their cohort and circumstances, they are expected to use this funding for specific activities which will help pupils catch up on missed education.
