Why is Homework important?
Homework is a very important part of a learner’s College work. It helps develop independent learning skills and enables learners to use a variety of skills which may be different from the ones used in lessons. Homework is an extension of class work and should not to be seen as something learners need to do to finish off what they did not do in College.
Regular homework reinforces work carried out in lessons; if learners do their homework regularly it helps them to get into a routine and this makes studying easier to manage. This is especially important as they get towards their GCSE exams. To help learners do their homework, ICT 3 is open each break and lunch time and the Learning Resources Centre is open until 3.45 pm each day, except Tuesday and Thursday when there is a Homework Club from 3.05 pm to 4.05pm.
How much time should learners spend on Homework?
In Years 10 and 11 learners will need to spend approximately 40 minutes per subject per night on homework. In Key Stage 3 (Years 7 - 9) it will be less. This is an average over a fortnight, and may vary from night to night depending on workload. It is not usual for learners to be given work that must be completed the next day, in order for them to develop the skills of managing their homework over a week or so. |
